In the ongoing rivalry between Napa and Sonoma, score one for Sonoma.
TripAdvisor, the booking and rating site, has declared Sonoma County the Number One wine destination in the nation, edging out Napa for the top spot.
The honor, part of the annual Traveler’s Choice Awards, was determined based on travelers’ reviews and opinions for local wineries, restaurants, attractions and accommodations.

TripAdvisor said in a statement that travelers “love the laid-back, unpretentious vibe of the wineries,” in Sonoma County.

“The TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Wine Destinations, like all TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards, are based on millions of valuable reviews and opinions from TripAdvisor travelers around the world,” Lesley Carlin, a travel expert with the online site, told Breakaway. “Our travelers love Sonoma. While Napa is very popular as well, Sonoma simply had the edge this time.”

The award affirms what Sonomans have long maintained — that Sonoma County has everything the better-known Napa offers, and more. Fifty-five miles of coastline for one, as well as more outdoor recreational opportunities for active travelers.

Ken Fischang, president and CEO of Sonoma County Tourism, said the top ranking shows that “Sonoma County is a world-class wine region.”

Also in the Top 10 in descending order is The Willamette Valley, Ore., Finger Lakes, N.Y., Long Island, N.Y., Paso Robles, Ca., Temecula Valley, Ca., Walla Walla, Wash., Palisade, Colo., and Plymouth, Ca.
